I always look forward to seeing what it’s like onshore in the places you visit. I was interested to see by how much your catamaran pitched on the wind as I am thinking of buying a cat and have previously owned monohulls. It seems they don’t get in the groove and keep their rails down as much as a monohull, or do you think there isn’t a lot of difference? This is the solution to seawater egress into your saildrive oil:
The saildrives are not vented, so when they get hot and the oil expands, it gets pushed out through the lower prop seals. After shutdown and the unit cools, a vacuum develops and draws seawater back in through the prop shaft seals. The more hearing and cooling cycles, the more the shaft seals wear and leak. The solution is to vent the oil case. Do this by drill and tap the oil cap. Put a 1/4″ hose barb fitting into the cap, and connect tubing from the cap to above the waterline inside the engine room. This acts as a standpipe. Put a fresh set of lower seals in and your mikly oil days are gone. I’ve operated our SD-20s like this successfully for over 5000 hours
