Does this look crooked to anyone else?! [Ep. 139]

The neck is all good but that seriously looks a bit wonky doesn’t it ?. I’m sure its fine. We’re over the moon with the good news. Join us for propeller dramas, an interview with 3 ladies who spent 60 rowing across the Atlantic and some adventures under the Caribbean sunshine. Its great to be back in a place we can have a go at some fish. Riley is pretty excited to go spearfishing again. Cheers, Elayna.

  1. So So glad your neck is fine, and you made it safe and sound, now relax and enjoy, and as always thanks for the ride, it is always a pleasure to be aboard!

  2. So glad your neck is ok Riley, and yes that one joint surely does appear wonky on the x-ray. Fishing line on the prop is always a major pain – at 2500 rpm it gets a lot of wraps in very short order ! Thanks for recording and sharing all of your excellent travel adventures ! If you guys are travelling past or into Toronto, Ontario and would like to try a Northern Ontario lake cottaging adventure, let me know !

  3. It looks like it’s bending a little to one side. I have a herniated disk on C5 C6. I’ve run two NYC Marathons. It might not be the best idea to celebrate by going running since that’s high impact and causes tension in the neck and shoulders. Not sure what the doctor would say. Glad to hear evrything’s OK.

  4. Please! Don’t run!! I have a neck injury and pinched nerves that cause numbness. Running is OUT OF THE QUESTION!! Be cautious with arms raised as well Tether tether. Tether tether!! Do apply a slight traction pull for neck support and do a palates spinal curl, slowly 3 times a day to open each vertebrate. If you can find a Tibetan Singing bowl 12″, D or F, the minute vibrations will be miraculous for healing those tiny muscles and nerve endings you’ve damaged. Safe and unbridled joy in every minute of your day!! Huge hugs…

  5. Hey you two. Very happy all is going well.
Ryley, Very happy your neck is looking good. Your lucky guy, take good care of it and you’ll be sailing for many years to come.

I used to have a home on Monserrat, (which I’m sure you know is next door to Antigua) just before the volcano blew it’s top twenty some years ago. At the time it was a disaster of epic proportion and everyone had to evacuate and many were killed. My home some how survived but most of the valley below was wiped out by a pyroclastic flow washing away one of the most picturesque tropical valleys I’ve ever seen. Anyway, you guys should check out what this little Island that was all but destroyed and now has sprung back to life. Here is an article. I think it would make for a great video segment and of great interest… Cheers…

  7. It looks a bit off center to me. No clue if the position is a functional non-issue. I am thinking it is best to not pursue perfection; if it is not a medical problem, don’t fix it. Certainly, the docs did all they could with what they had.
Glad to know Riley is on the mend. Also, glad for you to have the drama sorted.
    Cheers
    Marty

  8. Reposting this message : If you’re still planning to come up the East Coast and you getting to the New York area get in touch with me and I could be a shuttle service or a tour guide or whatever you may need. It would be my pleasure to show you two around.

  9. Thank´s God for the news. It´s time to get back to full-life. Congrat´s

  10. Sooooo glad/relieved Riley’s vertebrae are aligned ( to within 0.006 mm, according to my estimate) – you guys do not cease to amaze me with your humanity and love for each other – wherever you go, whatever you are doing is a delight to watch !

    Consider yourselves hugged!

  11. Thank God for that! Now Riley, please don’t facepalm anything again!

    Cheers and safe sailing,

    Mike

  12. Hey guys just wanted to say I appreciate your adventures and admire you both.

Couple thoughts about the neck. Due to your surgical history I believe a MRI (or CT) of the neck is still MANDITORY – especially considering your self-reports of weakness. I suspect you have a disc pressing on either the C5-6 and/or C6-7 nerve root on that side. Any chance you can post the side view of the xray?

Nonetheless – “I implore you – 7up… SHURLGSPHA” to get a Neurosurgeon to review your MRI!

  13. First, I am truly glad that you got that second opinion (on Riley’s neck) from that Orthopaedic surgeon. He really did sound confident that all would be well – in time.
Second, whilst I’m sure you will have some devotees of your videos who don’t want more about your technical issues, I would like as much and in as much detail as poss.
And lastly, don’t fret about that comment about being e-beggars. Your videos give a huge amount of pleasure to a great many people – which is precisely what they’re meant to do. Maybe you should consider yourselves to be in the Entertainment business – but without quite so much financial return!

  14. Having practiced medicine for 20 years – I’d like to say that you should trust the 2nd opinion you got from that Orthopod on the dock, however, I don’t think he saw the videos of you after you hit your head and exclaimed, “Oh my neck!”

As a result, I will supersede all other opinions (including your own) and gently tell you that you are not out of the woods yet…

The video where the Orthopedic is speaking to you about the four muscles of the rotator cuff fails to acknowledge your past surgical history, and the mechanism of injury the created the signs and symptoms of numbness pain, and most significantly – weakness.

The root cause of your weakness, I can say with complete medical confidence, is not a rotator cuff injury. Rather the root cause of your signs and symptoms is from a pathology of the nerves coming out of your neck.

Furthermore, I thought my Infinite Jest reference in my last email, would get me an extra once of respect, because you would (hopefully) see our souls like the same kind of writer/thinker…

Please don’t blow off my request for you to complete your medical evaluation. I know it is tempting to hear what you want to hear, but be the MAN I believe you to be, and do something about the scary potential bad outcome.

    RESPECT!

  15. Looks to me like he first swallowed an owl, then had a dog biscuit for desert.
    Otherwise he looks fine.

  16. Glad you are ok Riley!!! I’m a pediatrician and not a neurosurgeon so I prob couldn’t help. Ha. Thanks for brightening my day guys. Great video. Dr J

  17. Riley, in this episode 139 at about 3:41 you mention lots more information about your Outremer crossing on a Patreon episode. I am VERY interested. Which Patreon episode are you talking about? Thank you! Please respond by email — I don’t regularly read comments.

  19. Glad your neck is ok Riley. You mentioned in this episode a comment on your ethenticity…. screw who ever questions you bud, unfortunately once you get more and more notice, a lot of “negative weeds” sprout up. No worries. You have some great fans out here. I live what you two do. Keep it up. I’m totally jealous of your journey and live vicariously through you guys videos. Tight sails, sunny days, safe travels.

  20. Yup, it’s crooked. Two important questions: what does it look like from the side (lateral view), and what did it look like before? An MRI to look at soft tissues—nerve, disk, muscles) could be quite informative. CT may also be useful to look at the bones. But the most valuable information comes from the old films, to see if the hardware has moved. Contact the facility where you had the surgery and ask them to send you the old images. It’s pretty easy if they were digital, and even if they were film, they can snap a picture and send it. Most importantly, are you improving? If you are pain free and if the strength is returning, even slowly, you are probably on the right track.
